‘Stop Appeasing Trump’: Congress Asks PM Modi to Reject Current Trade Deal

NEW DELHI: The Congress urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to “appease” US President Donald Trump on Tuesday and notified the Centre against signing any trade agreement related to India-US that was claimed to be currently tilted against India’s interests.

The remarks came as US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer began a two-day visit to India for trade-related discussions. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said there was “absolutely no need” for India to be “bamboozled” into accepting a trade pact that was not in the country’s favour. He also said the Modi government should draw inspiration from Malaysia, which had pushed back against its proposed trade deal with the United States following a recent US Supreme Court verdict. Ramesh said, an India-US Joint statement on trade was issued on February 6, 2026 on the request of PM Modi, while he was under pressure from Rahul Gandhi’s expose in Parliament of his cowardice in front of China.

The Centre has not yet responded to the Congress’s latest criticism. Trade negotiations between the two countries are expected to continue during Greer’s visit.
