Delhi under tight security for BRICS Summit; 15,000 cops, 200 paramilitary companies deployed
NEW DELHI: Delhi has been placed under heightened security as India prepares to host top world leaders at the two-day 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam this weekend.
Around 15,000 Delhi Police personnel, 200 companies of paramilitary forces and more than 500 CCTV cameras have been deployed across the national capital as part of extensive security arrangements for the summit, officials said.
The summit is scheduled to begin on Saturday and will bring together leaders and senior representatives of BRICS member countries.
The Delhi Traffic Police has clarified that there will be no complete shutdown of the city during the summit. However, commuters may face temporary stoppages, diversions and restrictions, particularly along routes being used by VVIP convoys.
Traffic authorities have advised people to plan their journeys in advance and allow additional travel time, especially in areas around the summit venue and key roads connecting it with other locations.
Security agencies have also stepped up surveillance and coordination measures to ensure the safe movement of visiting dignitaries and the smooth conduct of the summit.
The heightened security arrangements are expected to remain in place throughout the summit, with traffic restrictions being imposed temporarily depending on the movement of VVIP convoys.
