Ganga crosses highest flood level at Patna’s Gandhi Ghat as rains intensify
PATNA: The water level of the Ganga at Gandhi Ghat in Patna crossed the river’s highest flood level on Saturday morning amid heavy rainfall in Bihar, raising concerns of inundation in low-lying areas of the state capital.
According to the latest bulletin issued by the Water Resources Department (WRD), the river rose by 10 cm in four hours to reach 50.53 metres at 10 am, which was 1 cm above the highest flood level of 50.52 metres at the site. The Ganga was also flowing about 1.93 metres above its danger mark of 48.60 metres.
Authorities have urged people, particularly those living in low-lying and riverine areas, to remain cautious as the water level continues to rise.
The situation in Bihar has worsened following heavy rainfall, with several major rivers, including the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Budhi Gandak, Punpun and Ghaghra, flowing above danger levels in different areas. The state government has stepped up flood preparedness and relief measures amid the heightened threat.
The development comes a day after rising Ganga waters inundated several ghats in Patna, with floodwater also reaching cremation grounds along the river.
