Mayawati Says Opposition Uneasy Over BSP’s Brahmin Candidate Strategy for UP Polls
Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati on Monday claimed that opposition parties, particularly the Samajwadi Party (SP), have become anxious over her party’s decision to field Brahmin leaders as candidates for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
In a post on X, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said the BSP’s outreach to upper-caste communities, especially Brahmins, and its decision to provide them with greater political representation had unsettled rival parties.
“Since the BSP started including upper caste society, especially Brahmins, and began making them candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections, all opposition parties, especially the SP, are showing anxiety,” Mayawati said. She asserted that the BSP’s strategy of expanding its social base while maintaining its commitment to the welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and minorities had strengthened the party’s electoral prospects.
Mayawati alleged that the SP was particularly concerned over the BSP’s efforts to attract Brahmin voters, claiming the development had caused unease within the opposition camp ahead of the state polls.
The Samajwadi Party has not responded to Mayawati’s remarks.
