Mumbai Erupts in Dahi Handi Frenzy as Streets Turn into Arenas, Thousands Join Celebrations
MUMBAI: Festive fervour reached a crescendo across Mumbai and neighbouring cities on Saturday as thousands of ‘Govindas’ formed human pyramids to break curd-filled earthen pots suspended high above the ground, marking the traditional Dahi Handi celebrations.
From the narrow lanes of Lalbaug and Dadar in central Mumbai to large venues across Thane and the suburbs, the beats of dhols and cheers from crowds filled the air as Govinda troupes, including women’s teams, took part in the annual spectacle. Dahi Handi is celebrated a day after Janmashtami and is associated with the childhood exploits of Lord Krishna.
Teams that had spent weeks practising balance, coordination and pyramid formation travelled to different parts of the Mumbai metropolitan region to compete for cash prizes running into lakhs of rupees. The tradition has evolved into a major competitive event, with organised Govinda pathaks attempting increasingly tall pyramids.
Handis decorated with flowers, balloons and other festive ornaments were suspended at residential societies, busy junctions and open grounds. Large gatherings of spectators turned several streets and neighbourhoods into arenas as teams repeatedly attempted to reach the pots.
The physically demanding tradition carries significant safety risks, with participants facing the possibility of falls and injuries while climbing multi-tiered human pyramids. This year, Maharashtra has also enhanced insurance protection for participating Govindas, with accidental hospitalisation cover increased to ₹2 lakh per person, while the premium remains ₹75. More than 1.51 lakh Govindas are covered under the scheme this year, according to reports.
The celebrations also prompted traffic restrictions and diversions at several locations across Mumbai as authorities prepared for large crowds and congestion around major Dahi Handi venues.
With music, dancing, decorated handis and roaring crowds accompanying every successful attempt, Mumbai once again witnessed the distinctive mix of devotion, athleticism, teamwork and community spirit that defines its Dahi Handi tradition.
