WPI Inflation Rises to 9.87% in June as Food, Mineral Prices Surge
NEW DELHI: India’s wholesale price inflation (WPI) accelerated to 9.87 per cent in June, up from 9.68 per cent in May, driven by a sharp rise in the prices of food and non-food items.
The Commerce and Industry Ministry said mineral oils (including petroleum products), food articles, the manufacture of basic metals, and the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products were the major contributors to the rise in wholesale inflation during June.
The increase reflects the impact of the West Asia crisis and the effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for India’s crude oil imports, thereby pushing up fuel and food costs.
