Nepal at Risk of Secondary Flash Floods amid Debris Blockages: ICIMOD

NEW DELHI: A secondary flash flood threat persists in Nepal as debris from an ice-rock avalanche that may have triggered the initial floods is accumulating at a river confluence, potentially forming a temporary dam, senior ICIMOD cryosphere specialist Mohd Farooq Azam warned.

The cryosphere refers to parts of the Earth’s surface covered by frozen water. The death toll from flash floods in Nepal and Tibet has crossed 470, while nearly 1,000 people remain missing as search and rescue operations enter their third day.
