US-Iran face-off in the Middle East
Washington: Tensions between the US and Iran have flared up again, straining a tenuous ceasefire. This time, there has been a naval confrontation between the two countries. Near the Strait of Hormuz, both nations have accused each other of taking provocative actions. Iran claimed to have fired a warning shot, while the US said the Iranian drone was shot down and radar sites were targeted. The US said Iran had flown a drone in the Strait of Hormuz. In retaliation, the US attacked Tehran’s radar sites. The US military has clarified that it was an Iranian drone. In that case, the radar site was attacked. The US military also said that it had responded forcefully to four Iranian “single-pronged attack drones” flown towards the Strait of Hormuz.
It also said the drone “poses an immediate threat to regional maritime traffic.” The US military “attacked Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites on the islands of Beruk and Qwesham to put off further attacks,” the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement. Iran has not commented publicly on the incident. The ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran have jeopardized an unstable ceasefire. The attack comes after ceasefire talks between the US and Iran gets delayed and an agreement to end the war failed to move forward. The US and Israel launched a massive attack on Iran on February 28, sparking conflict across the Middle East. Iran responded by attacking Israel and US-allied nations in the Gulf. And effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passes. This step caused global oil prices to increase.
