India Launches UPI in Greece, Expands Global Digital Payments Footprint

NEW DELHI: India has expanded the global reach of its flagship digital payments platform by launching the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Greece, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced on Tuesday.

The rollout marks another milestone in India’s efforts to internationalize its homegrown digital payment ecosystem, enabling eligible users to make instant, secure, and seamless money transfers while significantly reducing transaction costs compared to conventional payment methods.

Announcing the development in a social media post, Goyal said the launch of UPI in Greece would make cross-border digital transactions faster, more convenient, and more affordable.

The latest expansion comes just weeks after UPI was introduced at Galeries Lafayette, the iconic department store in Nice, France. Earlier, in 2024, the payment platform was launched at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, allowing Indian travelers to make digital payments at one of the world’s most visited tourist destinations.
