Don’t Impose Clerics’ Diktats on Women, Kerala BJP Chief Chandrasekhar Says

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Saturday said women have the constitutional right to learn, celebrate and live with freedom and dignity, and opposed any attempt to impose clerics’ diktats on them.

In a post, Chandrasekhar said the BJP and NDA would not allow efforts to push women into “medieval seclusion”. His remarks came a day after a prominent Islamic scholars’ body in Kerala urged organisers of religious events not to bring women into public spaces or place them among unrelated men.

Without referring to any specific incident or religion, Chandrasekhar said those seeking to confine women to the shadows belonged to the past and had no place in a democratic and “Viksit Bharat”.
