Teachers Cannot Refuse Census Assignment, Says Calcutta High Court
KOLKATA: The Calcutta High Court ruled that teachers deputed for census work would be considered to be on school duty and cannot refuse the assignment, as the exercise is in the national interest. Justice Rao said the Director of Census Operations and Charge Officer must inform the head of the institution about the date, time and place of the teacher’s census duty. The court observed that teachers, being public employees drawing salaries from the exchequer, cannot avoid census work despite their teaching responsibilities.
