India, UK Strengthen Focus on Tech, Research and Startup Collaboration

New Delhi: India and the UK (United Kingdom) have discussed ways to deepen cooperation in innovation, technology, research, startups and emerging technologies during a bilateral meeting between their trade ministers, amid efforts to strengthen economic ties following the signing of a free trade agreement (FTA).

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held a virtual meeting with UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade Peter Kyle and reviewed opportunities to expand collaboration across key sectors driving future growth. Goyal said in a post on social media platform X, we discussed strengthening India-UK collaboration in innovation, technology, research, start-ups and emerging technologies.”

The discussions come at a significant time as India and the UK move towards implementing their recently concluded FTA, which is expected to boost bilateral trade and investment. However, certain issues, including the UK’s safeguard measures on steel imports, have emerged as concerns that could affect the smooth implementation of the agreement. Both sides are expected to continue engagement to address pending issues while advancing cooperation in areas such as innovation-led growth, technology partnerships and start-up ecosystems.
