India Will Always Stand Firmly With Sri Lanka in Times of Crisis: Rajnath Singh
COLOMBO: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka during times of crisis, saying the two neighbouring countries share a relationship rooted in common history, culture and faith.
Singh made the remarks during an interaction with members of the Indian diaspora in Colombo on the first day of his three-day visit to Sri Lanka. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral ties and hold discussions with the country’s top leadership on matters of mutual interest, including defence and security cooperation.
“India will always stand firmly with Sri Lanka whenever the island nation faces a crisis,” Singh said, underscoring India’s longstanding policy of supporting its close neighbour.
The Defence Minister highlighted the deep-rooted ties between India and Sri Lanka, noting that the relationship between the two countries goes beyond diplomatic and strategic cooperation. The shared heritage, cultural connections and religious links between the two nations have provided a strong foundation for bilateral relations over the years.
Singh’s visit comes as India and Sri Lanka continue to strengthen cooperation across several areas, with defence and maritime security remaining important components of their partnership. The two countries share close strategic and geographical links in the Indian Ocean region.
During his stay, Singh is scheduled to meet Sri Lanka’s senior leadership and discuss ways to further deepen bilateral cooperation. His visit also reflects India’s continued emphasis on maintaining close relations with Sri Lanka and supporting stability and security in the region.
Addressing the diaspora, Singh also stressed the importance of the people-to-people relationship between the two countries. The Indian community in Sri Lanka has historically played an important role in strengthening social, cultural and economic links between the two nations.
India has consistently maintained close engagement with Sri Lanka, including cooperation during periods of economic and other challenges. Singh’s remarks further reinforced New Delhi’s commitment to standing by Colombo when it confronts difficulties.
The three-day visit is expected to provide an opportunity for both sides to review existing cooperation and explore avenues for expanding their partnership, particularly in defence, security and other areas of mutual interest.
