MLA Urges Maharashtra Govt to Declare Drought in Latur
LATUR: Latur Rural BJP MLA Ramesh Karad and other political leaders have urged the Maharashtra government to declare a drought in Latur district and other parts of Marathwada, citing inadequate rainfall and growing concerns over drinking water and cattle fodder.
Karad submitted a memorandum to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday, seeking an immediate drought declaration and urgent relief measures for farmers facing difficulties due to the prolonged dry spell.
The MLA highlighted the impact of insufficient rainfall on agricultural activities and the availability of water in the region. He said the prevailing conditions had created serious concerns for farmers, particularly regarding drinking water supplies and fodder for livestock.
Karad called for prompt government intervention to assess the situation and provide assistance to affected farmers. He urged the state administration to take necessary steps to mitigate the impact of the dry conditions and ensure that essential resources remain available to rural communities.
The demand comes amid concerns in several parts of Marathwada over rainfall deficiency and its impact on agriculture and rural livelihoods. The region is traditionally vulnerable to water scarcity, making adequate monsoon rainfall crucial for farming, drinking water supplies and livestock.
The BJP MLA’s memorandum also sought relief measures for farmers who have been affected by the prolonged lack of adequate rainfall. A formal drought declaration would enable the government to undertake relief and mitigation measures based on an assessment of ground conditions.
Karad and other leaders have urged the state government to act without delay, particularly in areas where water availability and fodder supplies are becoming increasingly difficult.
The state government’s decision is expected to depend on an assessment of rainfall, crop conditions, water availability and other prescribed drought-related parameters.
With the dry spell continuing to raise concerns, the demand for a drought declaration has added pressure on the Maharashtra government to address the immediate needs of farmers and rural residents in Latur and other drought-prone areas of Marathwada.
