Vaibhav Can Revive Test Cricket If He Excels in Longest Format: Srikkanth
CHENNAI, June 19: Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth believes teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has the potential to spark a revival of Test cricket if he succeeds in the longest format, while urging fans and experts to avoid placing excessive expectations on the young cricketer.
The 15-year-old has earned his maiden call-up to India’s T20 squad following his impressive performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He has been named in the squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of Ireland and England, which begins in Belfast on June 26 and includes two T20Is against Ireland followed by a five-match series against England.
Speaking about the youngster, Srikkanth said Sooryavanshi possesses a rare talent capable of drawing crowds and generating excitement wherever he plays. “Vaibhav could help revive interest in the format if he goes on to succeed in Test cricket, because people will come to watch him bat. He has that kind of appeal,” Srikkanth said. The former opener, however, cautioned against dissecting every aspect of the teenager, stressing that young players need time and space to grow. “We should not over-analyse him after every innings. He is just 15 years old and has a long journey ahead. Let him enjoy his cricket and develop naturally,” Srikkanth said.
