Moradabad: NRI Accused of Bigamy, Dowry Harassment, Rape; FIR Registered
Moradabad: A non-resident Indian (NRI) has been booked in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad for allegedly hiding his first marriage, marrying another woman, and facing charges of dowry harassment, rape, attempt to murder and other offences, police said on Monday.
The case was registered following a complaint by the victim’s father, who alleged that Gagandeep Singh, a resident of Rampur district, was already married to a woman in Canada when he married his daughter in April 2022.
According to the complaint, the accused and his family accepted dowry worth nearly Rs 2 crore at the time of the marriage. The complainant further alleged that the woman came to know about Singh’s existing marriage shortly after the wedding. When she refused to have physical relations after learning about his first marriage, Singh allegedly raped her on their wedding night, the complaint claimed.
The FIR also alleges that when the woman’s family later demanded the return of the dowry money, the accused allegedly opened fire on them, leading police to invoke charges of attempt to murder. Officials said an investigation is underway, and further legal action will be taken based on the findings. No arrests had been reported immediately.
