Thane, Palghar Reeling under Heavy Rain; Landslide Reported at Malshej Ghat
THANE: Heavy rains lashed Maharashtra’s Thane and Palghar districts over the past 24 hours, triggering a minor landslide at the scenic Malshej Ghat and resulting in dozens of complaints related to fallen trees, officials said on Wednesday.
The landslide occurred on Tuesday evening along the Malshej Ghat stretch, an important route connecting Thane and Pune districts. According to Thane Resident Deputy Collector Sandeep Mane, the incident took place between the “wash point” and the “umbrella point” between 6 pm and 7 pm. Authorities immediately deployed earth-moving machinery to clear the debris. The road was reopened promptly, ensuring smooth traffic movement, and no casualties or injuries were reported.
Heavy rainfall also led to multiple emergency calls across the Thane district. Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) chief Yasin Tadvi said 27 complaints were received over the last 24 hours, including 18 related to fallen trees or branches and four fire-related incidents.
Official rainfall data showed Thane city received 77.97 mm of rain during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Wednesday, taking the season’s cumulative rainfall to 81.26 mm. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including Palghar, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, with authorities urging residents to remain cautious.
