Breaking into Product Management in 2026: Common Challenges and the Right Path Forward

As organisations increasingly adopt product-led growth strategies and accelerate digital transformation, demand for skilled product managers continues to rise. However, industry reports suggest that professional readiness is struggling to keep pace.

According to the McKinsey & Company Project Management Index 2025, fewer than half of product managers feel fully prepared for their roles, underscoring a significant capability gap. Meanwhile, the Deloitte Digital Project Management 2025 report found that 43 per cent of new product launches fail to achieve business goals due to execution-related challenges.

Experts say the disconnect highlights a growing need for practical product management skills, with many aspiring professionals facing barriers such as limited hands-on experience in real product environments, despite strong hiring demand across industries.
