India Gets Lower 10% Tariff under Trump’s New Trade Plan: Key Impact Explained.
New Delhi: The United States has imposed a fresh round of tariffs on imports from 60 trading partners over concerns about forced labour in global supply chains, with India placed in the lower 10 per cent tariff bracket instead of the higher 12.5 per cent rate.
The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) said the tariffs follow an investigation that found several economies had failed to prevent imports made using forced labour adequately. India, which was initially at risk of facing a steeper tariff when the proposal was unveiled in June, was shifted to the 10 per cent category in the final notification, offering some relief to Indian exporters despite continued uncertainty over bilateral trade.
The US said the measures are intended to strengthen enforcement against forced labour and ensure fair competition for American businesses. The move, announced under Section 301 of the US Trade Act of 1974, replaces the temporary universal 10 per cent tariff that was set to expire.
