Trump Invokes India’s Election Model, Urges Passage of SAVE America Act
WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump has praised India’s election system while pushing for stricter voting laws in the US, including mandatory voter identification.
In a Truth Social post, Trump cited Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s reported question on how US elections can be held without valid photo ID. He said India recorded around 646 million voters in its recent general election, with less than one per cent voting by mail.
Trump urged Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, which seeks proof of citizenship for voter registration, nationwide voter ID requirements and tighter restrictions on mail-in voting. The bill has faced opposition and divisions in Congress, with the US Senate adjourning earlier this month without advancing it.
