UPI Tap-to-Pay without Internet? Rs 2,000 Offline Payments Likely Soon

India is working on a new offline UPI payment feature that will allow users to make tap-and-pay transactions without an internet connection on either the smartphone or the merchant’s PoS terminal, according to a report.

The feature is developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and expected to support NFC-based payments of up to Rs 2,000 through UPI Lite wallets. The offline capability could enable seamless payments in low-connectivity areas such as flights and metro networks, with transaction verification completed once internet access is restored.
