Manipur Paralysed by 24-Hour Strike Demanding NRC Update before Census

IMPHAL:) A 24-hour Manipur strike called by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFC), demanding updating of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the Census, paralysed normal life in at least five valley districts on Tuesday.

Businesses and educational institutions remained closed, while roads looked deserted. The strike came after the Union government on Monday deferred the Census exercise in Manipur following demands from civil society organisations.

State Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam had appealed to the JFC to withdraw the strike. The Census was scheduled to begin in Manipur on September 1.
