Nepal Floods Triggered by Ice-Rock Avalanche, Say Scientists

KATHMANDU: Devastating floods along Nepal’s Bhotekoshi–Trishuli corridor were triggered by a massive ice-rock avalanche in the high Himalayas rather than conventional rainfall, according to a preliminary report by Nepalese scientists commissioned by the Nepal Environment Society (NES).

The report, released on Sunday, comes as the death toll from the flash floods climbed to 903 on Monday, with authorities continuing to recover bodies from the affected areas.
